Not only does senior Diya Das find the time to serve as co-editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Opinator, make High Honors Dean's List, be an active member in chorale, orchestra, Math Club, Community Service Executive Committee, and head Sem's Angel Tree project, but she also found the time to write and get two of her books published.
Diya's two books, "The Evolution of an Identity: Indian American Immigrants from the Early 20th Century to the Present" and "In Mind: A Collection of Poetry" have been published by Tribute Books are both available at Barnes & Noble, Borders, tributebooks.com and various other locations. Diya recently held a booksigning at the downtown Wilkes-Barre Barnes & Noble store.
When asked how she was able to write not one, but two books, Diya said about her book of poetry "I started writing the poetry in fifth grade, and I would write usually at night." Her other book was part of an assignment for the Seminar in American Studies course taught by History Department Chairperson Steven A. Ris. The project, called "The Odyssey," combines literature, history, and imagination, and requires that students choose a theme from American history and trace its development through three geographic areas and time periods. Diya's project not only evolved into a published book, but also won the Frederick Rudolph Prize for Historical Writing at Wyoming Seminary's awards assembly in 2005.
