Sem Wrestlers Finish Third at National Prep School Championships at Lehigh

Wyoming Seminary Wrestling Team

The Wyoming Seminary wrestlers concluded an outstanding 2007–08 wrestling season finishing third out of 144 teams at the National Prep School Tournament at Lehigh University on February 22-23 with 10 members of the team earning National Prep All American recognition. The previous weekend the squad won their second consecutive Pennsylvania Prep School title.

The encouraging aspect of all of this is that seven of the ten All-Americans are underclassmen. The third place finish this year follows a runner up finish for the team in 2007. In 2006 the team was 8th, up from 27th in ’05, 47th in ’04 and 139th in ’03. The improvement of the program under Coach John Gordon’s tutelage has truly been dramatic.

The Sem cheering section was among the largest in the arena including all of the team members’ parents coming from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Nevada and Massachusetts. Coach Gordon was particularly pleased to see wrestling alumni Alex Steinbergh ’58 (Boston, MA), Sam Mitchell ’64 (Berwyn, PA) and Burke Wellborn 81 (Pensacola, FL) in attendance.
