Sem’s MathCounts team placed first in regional competition for the third year in a row on Saturday, February 15. Team members Matt Blom, Brandon Bombe, Adithya Pugazhendhi and Amy Shick defeated teams from eleven Luzerne County schools in the annual event held at Wilkes University.
In addition to the team honors, students placed in the individual competition. Adithya Pugazhendhi won first place, with Brandon Bombe in third and Matt Blom in fourth. Alternate contender Wyatt Cox won an individual award for having the best score among the alternates. Other students who participated in the individual competition were Ben Hornung, Renata O’Donnell, Alex Severns and Sheena Syal.
Winning three years in a row entitles the school to permanently keep the MathCounts trophy, which will be displayed with two other three-peat trophies that previous teams have won. The team will attend state competition at the end of March.
Coaches for the team are Lower School faculty members Frank Bower, Colin Conrad, Mary Kolessar and Middle School Dean Patti Summerhill.
