It’s a story of two sets of identical twins, a condemned man, one spouse, a doctor, a secluded nun and some very confused townspeople. The Wyoming Seminary Players will present William Shakespeare’s well-loved comedy “The Comedy of Errors” on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26 in the Buckingham Performing Arts Center on North Sprague Avenue in Kingston.
The production, beginning at 8 p.m., is open to the public. Tickets are $3 in advance and $4 at the door.
In “The Comedy of Errors,” a young man named Antipholus of Syracuse travels to the Turkish city of Ephesus with his servant, Dromio, but neither man knows that his identical twin lives in Ephesus and is well known there. Antipholus and Dromio begin carrying out their business, but become increasingly puzzled and angry when townspeople confuse them with their twin siblings. The mystery is eventually explained, but not before the townspeople are convinced Antipholus and Dromio have gone mad.
Sem theater director Don Hopkins said the play helped pave the way for today’s situation comedies, since it features mistaken identities, happy endings and physical comedy.
“This play has enough slapstick, bad puns and farce to satisfy the most die-hard fan of theatrical comedy,” he said. “Additionally, some of the actors will portray jugglers who are part of a traveling troupe of actors. They’ll set up the scenes for the audience and then present their own version of ‘Comedy of Errors’ as a play within a play.”
This production is part of the 2007-08 Wyoming Seminary Performing Arts Series. For more information call 270-2190.
