“Children’s Impressions” at Art Show
 |
| Vincenzo Gaudino of Kingston, a second grader at Wyoming Seminary Lower School, presents “Impression Sunrise,” a tempera painting he created as part of his class’s year-long study of great Impressionist artists. |
Twenty-one Wyoming Seminary Lower School second graders recently invited family and friends to an art show and reception entitled “Children’s Impressions” to showcase their year-long study of great Impressionist artists. This year, each child wrote a reflection on their artwork, recording it so that it could be downloaded to a dozen iPods. Patrons of the art show were then able to listen to these reflections as they viewed each student’s work.
For almost two decades, Sem’s second-grade teachers have been incorporating a study of the Impressionists into their curriculum. Students are encouraged to create their own versions of some of the fine paintings they have studied in the classroom and in museums. A favorite work is framed for the show, and students then convene in the school’s Sordoni Library, dressed up and ready to show off their works. The show represents a traditional rite of Spring at the Lower School and is followed by a formal reception for family, friends, teachers and classmates.
