Trustee Academic Scholars Announced
Six area students were recently awarded Trustee Academic Scholarships (TAS) to attend Wyoming Seminary College Preparatory School.
The 2007 winners were:
- Lina Bader, Mountain Top
- Larissa Bohn, Swoyersville
- Jared Gollhardt, Dallas
- Mary Thede, Dallas
- Brianna Wise, Shavertown
- Mary (Molly) Perry, Waverly
Lina Bader of Mountain Top received the first-place, full tuition award. The daughter of Dr. Mamoun Bader and Dr. Phuong-Truc Pham of Mountain Top, she completed eighth grade at Crestwood Middle School. She plays the piano, was a member of the Crestwood MathCOUNTS Team and was the 2007 winner of the regional Spelling Bee, competing in the national contest and advancing to the sixth round.
Larissa Bohn of Swoyersville received a Greater Wyoming Valley regional TAS award. The daughter of Robert and Stacy Bohn of Swoyersville, she has completed eighth grade at Wyoming Valley West Middle School. She plays the trumpet as well as basketball, soccer and softball and was an active member of the WVW Journalism club and student government. She has been named to the National Honors Society.
Jared Gollhardt of Dallas received a Greater Wyoming Valley regional TAS award. The son of Seth and Darcy Gollhardt of Dallas, he has completed eighth grade as a home schooled student. He plays the drums and piano and has competed in national piano competitions. He also is active in his church’s youth group and in community service organizations such as Valley Santa and local food banks.
Mary Thede of Dallas received a Greater Wyoming Valley regional TAS award. The daughter of William and Maureen Thede of Dallas, she completed eighth grade at Gate of Heaven. She plays the piano and basketball, and was active in the Gate of Heaven Book Club, Gate Singers, school chorus and theater department. She also served others as a math tutor.
Brianna Wise of Shavertown received a Greater Wyoming Valley regional TAS award. The daughter of James and Cindy Wise of Shavertown, she completed eighth grade at Our Lady of the Pillar School in St. Louis, Mo. She plays the piano, dances and was a member of her school choir and hand bell choir. She also was active in her school’s student council and newspaper staff, plays volleyball and was a member of her church’s youth group and altar service group.
Mary “Molly” Perry of Waverly received a Lackawanna County regional TAS award. The daughter of David Perry and Maribeth Woody of Waverly, she has completed eighth grade at the Howard Gardner School of Discovery. She plays the cello and performs with the Marywood Strings Project and the Junior High Honors Strings Program. She also was active in her school newspaper and the youth group in her church, serving as a youth representative at the United Methodist Convention.
The TAS Program, now in its 27th year, recognizes the exceptional academic talent of eighth and ninth graders from schools other than Wyoming Seminary. The winners are chosen on the basis of their performance on a competitive exam, interviews and teacher recommendations. Wyoming Seminary awards one full-tuition and up to seven, two-thirds tuition regional scholarships each year.
