Lower School students get a bang out of Josh

From left: Elijah Miller, fourth grade, Meghan Chan, seventh grade, Jacob Idec, fifth grade, Courtney McCarthy, fifth grade, and Josh Affrime, Franklin Institute presenter.

Combustion and color came together recently on the stage of the Amato Auditorium when the Franklin Institute’s Traveling Science Show stopped by for a visit.

The Institute’s presenter Josh Affrime kept the primary and middle school students on the edge of their seats with a program titled “Chemistry Kaboom!” which explored the world of chemistry from that used in everyday life to the “detective” work carried out by laboratory scientists. Affrime demonstrated techniques to turn water into gel, make a foam structure in less than a minute and explode a hydrogen balloon. Several Sem students also participated in the demonstration.

The program, sponsored and funded by the Wyoming Seminary Lower School Parents Association, helped the students connect the science concepts they learn in class to their daily lives.
