Lawrence Brings National Basketball Showcase Camp to Northeast PA
On the last two weekends of October, some of the best basketball players in grades 5-9 from the northeastern United States will come to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton to compete in a major regional basketball camp.
Wilkes University will host the Pennsylvania Adidas Junior Phenom Camp for boys on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21 at the Wilkes Recreation Center. The girls camp will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27-28 at the Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton.
Rob Lawrence of Kingston, regional director of the Pennsylvania Adidas Junior Phenom Camps, said these camps offer talented athletes the chance to display their skills and the opportunity to compete for placement at the National Adidas Junior Phenom Camp to be held in San Diego, Calif. in August, 2008.
This is the first time that Adidas Jr. Phenom has brought this national exposure camp to Northeastern Pennsylvania, Lawrence said. The top 10 girl and boy athletes from each age group will be recognized and the most outstanding athlete in each group will be invited to attend the national camp in San Diego. Lawrence said he hopes to have a great showing of players from the Northeast so that he can bring more national showcase camps to the area in the future.
Basketball coaches at the middle-school and high school level should encourage their players to attend this national showcase camp, said Lawrence.
According to George Washington, picture editor of Sports Illustrated Magazine and a Phenom camp coach, “The Pennsylvania Adidas Jr. Phenom Camp is an excellent opportunity for the young players in the northeast to showcase their skills in front of scouting services and coaches, which will ultimately give them the chance to compete at the national showcase camp.”
Each camp will begin with a guest lecture teaching fundamental skills. The athletes will then play a series of games, and will be coached by both area high school coaches and coaches from outside the region. Lawrence noted he is looking for more area coaches interested in coaching talented young players. As many as 60 games will be played during the two-day camp.
Scouting services will be on hand to select the top 10 athletes in each group and will name those girls and boys invited to attend the national camp, Lawrence said.
