Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day is Thursday, October 5. Grandparents Day is an annual opportunity for grandparents to spend time at school with their grandchildren. We realize that not all grandparents are able to attend that day, so we welcome surrogates of all kinds (aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors), anyone with whom your child may have a special relationship to join in the fun.

For more information and to register for Grandparents Day, click here or call the Alumni office at (570) 270-2140.

The Lower School closes at noon on Grandparents Day. Students are welcome to leave with their grandparents or be picked up at noon in car-line. There will be NO aftercare or p.m. bus on this day.

Spirit Fridays in October

As was the case last year, we will have school spirit dress down days each Friday in October. Students may dress down in Sem gear and/or blue and white to celebrate our school!

SemPresents: Limón Dance Company

Hailed as one of the world's greatest dance companies, the Limón Dance Company has been at the vanguard of American modern dance since its inception in 1946. The company will perform at the Upper School's Kirby Center for Creative Arts on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Information and tickets can be found at SemPresents.

Original Works...it's a real masterpiece!

Our school has teamed up with Original Works to offer a variety of very special items created using your child's beautiful artwork. You can purchase personal gifts and keepsakes while celebrating your child's creativity. Watch for the plastic bag to come home in your child's backpack in the next two weeks.

Gertrude Hawk Chocolates

It's that time of year again. Time to get a head start on your holiday shopping. The annual Gertrude Hawk candy sale is back! Your children should have already received their order forms from their teachers. You may submit an order online or on the school form by October 25. Orders will be distributed at school starting November 15 or you can have it shipped to your home (online orders). If you have any questions please email Patty Olsen at patriciaolsen9@yahoo.com. Thank you for your support.

Reminder from the School Nurse

I hope everyone is having a great start to the new school year! Since it has been almost a month since the first day of school, I thought I should reach out to parents about student medical records and school illness policies.

A big thank you to the parents who have completed all of their student's electronic medical records in the Magnus Health Tracker! If you are still receiving weekly email reminders, please log into the "My Sem" portal and click on the Magnus Health Tracker option in the "Enrollment and Permission forms" section to complete all of your student's forms. Most of the forms are to be done online and require an electronic signature. All students are also required to have an annual physical form and immunization record completed. These forms can be printed from Magnus to be completed and uploaded to the medical record, or sent in to me and I can upload them in my office. Also, all students in kindergarten, third grade, and seventh grade are required to submit a Dental Health form.

Please be reminded of our illness policy for the benefit of our school community. Children should not come to school if they are sick and should be fever-free for 24 hours without having taken any fever-reducing medicine like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil/Motrin (ibuprofen). If a student becomes ill during the school day, I must have written permission in their medical record before I can administer any medication at school. If a student is seen in my office for an illness or injury and I do not believe that he/she is able to tolerate the school day, I will make a phone call to a parent and the child will be sent home. This is for the safety and well-being of the student as well as the entire school community. Students should see me before a phone call is made to a parent to pick up the student from school.

Here's hoping for a healthy and safe school year for everyone!

Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns at mcoons@wyomingseminary.org or by phone at (570) 718-6615.

Radical Readers

Radical Readers will begin on Tuesday, October 10 at 7:45 a.m. and run until 8:10 a.m. (please note the new time) in the Sordoni Library. This early morning reading activity is a great way for students to begin their day…with a good book and a friendly buddy. Primary students are paired with middle school buddies who will listen and encourage as the younger students read aloud or the buddies will read to them. This relationship forms a bond of friendship and promotes the love of reading. Primary students may come up to the library as an alternative to going to the gym. The Sordoni Library is a bright and peaceful place filled with happy readers. Middle-school students will earn Blue and White team points for their community service. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Lucy Shick at (570) 718-6640 or lshick@wyomingseminary.org.

Science Olympiad

Any students in grades 6, 7 or 8 interested in joining the Science Olympiad Team are invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, October 11 from 3:15-4:30 p.m. in Mrs. Lott's room. Meetings will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15-4:30 p.m. Please click here for additional details.

MS Writing Clinic

The Middle School Writing Clinic will begin Monday, October 16, in room 208. The clinic will run every Monday from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Students who are working on specific papers or speeches are welcomed to attend the writing clinic which is staffed by middle-school teachers. Please note that it is not a tutoring or remedial session. If you have any questions please contact Kayanne Barilla, literacy department chair, at kbarilla@wyomingseminary.org.
