Welcome to Third Grade!
Third grade at Wyoming Seminary is an adventure! The children start their year off raising their very own butterflies. Our resident entomologists learn about the butterfly lifecycle, its habitat and migratory routes. While we can't follow our butterflies once they are released, we know where they are headed...their own adventure.
Teamwork is enhanced as third graders create hands-on projects that illustrate what the students are studying. Reading-- independently for pleasure and guided by teachers-- is an essential ingredient as the children cultivate their natural curiousity for understanding. Writing and editing become increasingly important while multilevel questions and daily discussions are all routine. As anthropologists third graders study counties around the world, learning their history, population, geography, customs and holidays.
In third grade our students spend the entire year studying either French or Spanish. The curriculum teaches our young students the basics of language and culture. Homework increases according to the students' abilities and skills as students assume new responsibilities.
Writing remains an essential component in primary education, and takes on a new level as our third grade students prepare to write their first research papers. Technology is fully utilized as a tool to allow our students to take the lead on researching, writing, editing and publicizing their own work.
