Admission to the Performing Arts Institute is limited, depending on such factors as ensemble needs and residence hall capacity. Once a particular instrument’s limit is reached, students who apply and who are provisionally accepted are placed on a waiting list.

To complete the admission process for the 2008 season, new applicants must submit the following:

  1. The application and application fee ($35 until May 1, $50 after May 1).
  2. The recommendation form to be completed by a music, theater or dance teacher. 
  3. The recommendation form to be completed by a classroom teacher.
  4. Audition
  5. Recorded materials submitted to PAI will not be returned. You may opt for a live audition. Call 570-270-2186 or e-mail onstage@wyomingseminary.org for information.

    • Musical theater applicants should submit a video cassette or DVD which includes a one-minute monologue from an American copyrighted play or music theater piece, and a two minute excerpt from a song of the Broadway musical genre, with accompaniment.  
     
    • If you are applying for dance, please include a videotape or photograph of yourself in first arabesque and/or tendu a la second.
     
    • Instrumental and vocal students (non-Jazz Track) should submit a 5 minute cassette tape or audio CD that includes samples of their technical and expressive ability in a variety of musical genres. 
     
    • Jazz Track

    Jazz Trumpet, Trombone, and Saxophone players should include one or two selections from the standard jazz repertoire (ex: Satin Doll, Now's the Time, Green Dolphin Street). Please play the melody and several choruses of an improvised solo. You are welcome to use either live or pre-recorded accompaniment, such as the Jamey Aebersold series of play-along recordings. Please also include a Concert-Bb Mixolydian scale and a Concert-F Dorian scale, in swing eighth notes at mm=120.
    Jazz Piano and Guitar
    players should include two selections from the standard jazz repertoire, one in a swing style and one in a latin style (ex: Satin Doll, Blue Bossa). Please include yourself playing the melody, comping on the chord changes, and playing an improvised solo. You are welcome to use either live or pre-recorded accompaniment, such as the Jamey Aebersold series of play-along recordings, although it is not a requirement for pianists.
    Bass players should include two selections from the standard jazz repertoire, one in a swing style and one in a latin style (ex: Satin Doll, Blue Bossa). Please include yourself playing the melody and walking the chord changes (improvisation is optional). You are welcome to use either live or pre-recorded accompaniment, such as the Jamey Aebersold series of play-along recordings, although it is not a requirement.
    Jazz Drummers
    should include examples of playing in four standard styles: medium swing (mm=100), fast swing (mm=190), bossa nova (mm=120), and rock (mm=120). Please include at least one minute of time-keeping in each style. You are welcome to add fills or solo if desired.

PAI accepts students ages 12-18. Dancers between the ages of 10 and 18 are accepted into the dance program.

 

Information about The Performing Arts Institute Junior Division for students age 7 through grade eight is available online or you may contact us and we will send the forms via U.S. mail.

Refund Policy

Staff is hired and supplies are ordered to accommodate those registered or enrolled for PAI. Refunds (total payments minus enrollment deposit and application fee) will be granted until three weeks prior to the program’s start.
