Ice Hockey
Overview
The Wyoming Seminary ice hockey team plays a competitive schedule designed around the school's calendar, exposing our student-athletes to high-level competition while maintaining Sem's academic integrity.
Sem played its first competitive season of ice hockey in 1992-93. Sem has since won multiple league championships. The Blue Knights in 2022-23 had a 21-9 record and won multiple tournaments, eventually finishing second in the 10-team Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL). Sem had a strong run in the 2023-24 MPHL playoffs, winning three of four contests; all three victories were in overtime or shootout.
Sem has developed alumni who have gone on to play in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, OHHL, QMJHL, USHL, NAHL, USPHL, EHL, BCHL, OJHL, CCHL and various professional leagues across Asia and Europe, as well as NCAA, U Sports and ACHA programs.
We believe that a strong body leads to a strong performance. Personalized strength and conditioning training, as well as guidance on nutrition and overall wellness, ensures players remain in peak condition throughout the season.
The camaraderie and connection among Wyoming Seminary hockey players is part of the team's charm. But players also make connections with coaches, opponents and professionals in the hockey world, opening doors to future opportunities in the sport.
Our hockey team boasts a remarkable roster of student-athletes from different countries, cultures and backgrounds who come together as a united force on the ice.

Dave Shultz — Assistant Coach
Dave Shultz is a longtime member of the Wyoming Seminary ice hockey program, first serving as an assistant coach in 2017. He's played a key role in Sem's recent successes, including the 2022-23 season in which the Blue Knights went 21-9 and won multiple tournaments. Shultz was Sem's Interim Head Coach at the end of the 2023-24 season, leading Sem to victories in three of four postseason games.
A graduate of SUNY Morrisville, where he played hockey and earned a degree in human performance and health promotion, Shultz continued his playing career during the 2012-13 season as a member of the East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) Wheeling Nailers.
Shultz has since worked as a personal trainer and performance coach, including at Sem, where he is the Strength and Conditioning Coach. Shultz was hired prior to the 2022-23 school year as Sem's first Strength and Conditioning Coach and plays a pivotal role in assessing, developing and evaluating the sport performance needs for all student-athletes.
Justin Lyle — Assistant Coach
Facilities
The Wyoming Seminary ice hockey team practices and plays home games at the Toyota SportsPlex, 38 Coal St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
It is not only the home of the Blue Knights, but also the official practice facility of the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is the top minor-league affiliate of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins.
Another facility that is integral to Wyoming Seminary ice hockey is across campus at the Pettebone-Dickson Student Center, which houses the weight room and the offices of athletic personnel like Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave Shultz.
