Overview
Wyoming Seminary girls tennis is a shining example of how individual growth and personal achievement, coupled with camaraderie, can elevate a team to incredible heights.
Many of Sem's best results have come in just the past few seasons.
The Blue Knights enter 2024 having won six straight Wyoming Valley Conference championships. Sem is also a four-time District 2 champion (1999, '05, '19, '21) and won the program's first PIAA state championship in 2021. The 2022 Blue Knights had a 16-1 record and won WVC Division 1. In 2023, Sem went 15-2, won the WVC and advanced to the district final.
Sem has also produced a pair of individual state champions. Nathalie Joanlanne '15 claimed the 2013 PIAA Class 2A title and Ilana Rosenthal '25 finished atop the 2022 PIAA Class 2A field. Rosenthal won her second state championship in 2023.
Sem's coaches offer personalized guidance and constructive feedback to each player, ensuring every member of the team receives the opportunity to reach their full potential.The journey of a Wyoming Seminary tennis player is not just about wins and losses, but also about growing into strong, confident and graceful individuals on and off the court.
Sportsmanship and fair play are cornerstones of Sem tennis and instill a sense of respect for opponents and deep appreciation for the game.

Fred Hockenbury - Head Coach
Coach Hockenbury brings more than 21 years of coaching and teaching experience, working with athletes ranging from beginners and middle school players to collegiate and elite competitors, including players on the WTA Tour. His experience includes serving as an assistant coach at Misericordia University, a tennis professional at Newberry Estate Country Club, and operating Odyssey Tennis, where he provides individualized instruction and player development.
A PTR-certified professional and USTA Safe Play-certified coach, he has extensive experience in player development, competitive preparation, UTR and the college recruiting process. He is also already familiar with Wyoming Seminary, having worked with both the girls’ and boys’ tennis programs during the 2025–2026 school year. That existing connection to our student-athletes and program will provide valuable continuity as he steps into his new role.
