Happy Holidays!

Have a wonderful holiday break and enjoy the start of the New Year! All classes will resume on Monday, January 8, 2018. Just a reminder that the Lower School office is closed December 25, 2017 through January 1, 2018.

Holiday Concert and Tea

Our annual holiday choral concert will be held on Friday, December 22. The concert begins at 9:00 a.m. (auditorium doors open at 8:45 a.m.). Concert dress is required for all participating chorus students and all Grade 8 students. All boys will be required to wear a jacket, shirt and tie or turtleneck, dress slacks, dress socks and shoes. Girls are required to wear a dress or a skirt and blouse/sweater and dress shoes.

The Holiday Tea begins immediately following the concert. All parents and grandparents are cordially invited. A reminder that ONLY eighth-grade students are to attend the tea. All other students should remain in their classrooms until picked up to go home.

Looking Ahead

A reminder that the 2017/2018 calendar has two changes from previous school years. School is closed on Monday, April 2, 2018, making that a four-day weekend. Also, Field Day is combined with our last day of school, Thursday, May 24, 2018. Consequently, the school year will conclude on that day. We look forward to continuing this wonderful year!

Music Department Update

Please join us in wishing Doug Piazza the best as he begins his family leave at the end of this week. Doug's expected return date is late February. Ms. Andrea Bogusko is covering Doug's classes and duties at the school while he is on leave. Andrea can be reached at abogusko@wyomingseminary.org or the main office phone line (570)718-6600.

The Lower School started WEBS - Women Empowered by Science - 15 years ago with Wilkes University. Almost every sixth-grade girl at the Lower School has participated in WEBS since 2002. This amazing program has expanded to other schools and to WEBS summer camp. Several female and male Lower School alumni help run the WEBS program as college students at Wilkes University.

Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Carrick

Exciting STEM Saturday in January

Children in grades kindergarten through eighth who would like to learn more about computer programming are invited to attend a special STEM Saturday at Sem to take part in a program titled "Beyond the Hour: Kids Who Code."

The program will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Lower School. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 11:00 a.m. and is free and open to the public. No previous experience in coding is required.

This event is designed to introduce or continue the exploration of computer coding begun during the "Hour of Code Challenge" held around the world during the week of December 4-10, 2017.

The January event will feature four sessions. The first session, designed for children in grades kindergarten to first grade, will introduce the programming basics through Kodable and Osmo and also by programming Bee-Bot robots. The second session will be open to children in second and third grade and will include unplugged coding and coding using using the Hopscotch and Lightbot apps. In the third session, students in fourth and fifth grades will build coding skills using the unique Apple Swift Playgrounds app and small robots. Fourth session students in sixth through eighth grades will code in various languages, including JavaScript and Python, that will help them gain a more in-depth understanding of coding.

Reservations for this event are required. For more information or to register please visit STEM Saturday on our website.

Inclement Weather

Delayed Opening: If your school district is on a delayed opening schedule, your student will be permitted to arrive in accordance with your district's announced time, whether your student rides the bus or is driven to school.

School Closing: If your school district closes your student will not be expected in school even if we are open. If you wish to transport your student in this situation, do so at your own discretion.

Early Dismissal: When we are contacted by a school district about an early dismissal, parents of children who ride the bus may expect their students to be dismissed when that bus arrives. Students who do not ride the bus but whose district is closing early may be picked up at the early dismissal time as well.

Our students' safety is our main concern during bad weather. As always, please check our homepage often and sign up for text alerts for weather-related announcements. For more detailed information about our Inclement Weather Policy please see our Lower School handbook.

Early Dismissal Form

Please verify that the early dismissal form you completed for the 2017-18 school year is still valid. If you need to make changes or have any questions, please call the office at (570) 718-6600.

From The Sordoni Library

MakerSpace Mondays:Our creative crafting, building and tinkering time will resume on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 7:45-8:15 a.m. in the Sordoni Library. Arts and crafts—making—develops such skills as observing, visual thinking, and pattern recognition. The common denominator among many noted scientists, including Einstein, is that hand-based hobbies figured significantly into their personal histories. Making and tinkering expands intellect. As philosopher Anaxagoras said, "The hand is the window to the mind." All age groups are welcome to join in on the fun!

Radical Readers will resume for the new year on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 8:00-8:15 a.m. and runs Tuesdays through Fridays, unless otherwise noted. Primary and middle-school students are invited to start their day with a good book in the Sordoni Library.

Baseball Academy

Misericordia University will host a Baseball Academy beginning January 21, 2018 for students in grades 1-8.
