Speech Prep

As the seventh-grade speech dates get closer, the iPresent team is offering several after-school opportunities for students to work on their speeches. The dates are optional, but they are very helpful. If students are behind on their speeches, however, we will contact parents to request students to stay after school to meet with iPresent teachers. All meetings will run from 3:15-5:00 p.m. Students can stay for the entire time or a portion of the time. The dates are as follows:

Monday, April 9
Thursday, April 12
Monday, April 16
Thursday, April 19

Upcoming Grade 7 Events

On Thursday, April 26 the seventh grade will venture on a tour of the Upper School campus. Speeches will be given during the morning followed by a trip to the Kingston campus. Normal Sem attire applies for the day's activities. Lunch will be provided at the Upper School dining hall. Students will return in time for their 3:12 p.m. dismissal.

On Friday, April 27 the seventh grade will travel to Frances Slocum State Park for a geocaching activity utilizing GPS tracking devices. Students will be bussed from school following their speeches and return to school before end of the day dismissal at 3:12 p.m. Pizza and snacks will be provided for lunch while at the park. Dress down rules will apply for students for the occasion.

Please contact Mr. Davis with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your cooperation.

Service Projects...Books Needed!

Grade 8 to visit Head Start:

This year each grade level has been asked to perform a service project in conjunction with our Round Square initiative. The Beekman Street Head Start Center in Wilkes-Barre will be the focus for the eighth grade this year. The eighth-grade students will visit with the pre-school aged children, and learn about why programs like this are so important to our community. The date for this project is April 24; the students will leave our school at 8:20 a.m. and return by 10:15 a.m. We are asking students to donate a new or gently used age appropriate book to be left at the Head Start center.

Grade 1 partnering with United Way:

The children in grade 1 are doing a service project and partnering with the United Way of Wyoming Valley to collect new and gently used books from now until April 20. Please click here for more information.

ERB Assessment Test Spring 2018 Dates for Grades 3-7

ERB assessment tests will be administered in April. All Lower School students in grades 3 through 7 will be taking the ERB tests online.

• Third and fourth grade dates: Wednesday, April 11, Thursday, April 12, Monday, April 16, and Tuesday, April 17, 8:20 a.m.-10:20 a.m.
• Fifth through seventh grade dates: Wednesday, April 18, Thursday, April 19, Monday, April 23, and Tuesday, April 24, 8:15 a.m.-10:15 a.m.

Students may bring a water bottle and a small, healthy snack on their designated testing days. Water bottles or snacks will not be provided. We will be administering the CTP version of the ERB program. CTP is an assessment of students attending schools that aspire to higher standards. The test covers reading, vocabulary, writing, mathematics, verbal and quantitative reasoning. The data collected from these tests help to inform you as well as our school about student performance in key areas of school achievement.

The purpose of the test is to determine what a student knows and can do at the time of testing. It helps to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses in achievement as well as helps teachers make decisions about their curriculum and instruction. Therefore, no test preparation is required. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kristine McCarthy, ERB testing coordinator, at kmccarthy@wyomingseminary.org. You may also check out this site: www.erblearn.org/services/ctp-overview/family-resources for more information.
