Earth Day Initiatives

At Sem, "Greener is Smarter!" and Earth Day is coming up - April 22! Did you know that virtually every piece of plastic ever made, with the exception of that which has been burned, still exists in some shape or form? During the week of April 16-20 our school will join in Earth Day Network's effort to "End Plastic Pollution" by taking some steps to reduce plastic use. Starting on April 16 we will no longer use plastic cups for condiments in the cafeteria. Save on plastic by pumping neatly on your plate or tan sectioned tray instead. In addition, our Lower School has signed up for the One Less Straw pledge, so straws will be provided only upon request in the cafeteria, and we encourage individuals to take the pledge. To further promote a sustainable Earth during Earth Day week, April 16 will be Meatless Monday in the cafeteria, with Metz providing some extra non-meat protein alternatives.

The Environmental Club will be sharing more plastic facts, ways we can reduce plastic pollution, and recycling right reminders - look in the Knight & Day, the cafeteria TV, and signs around the school. Thanks to our Metz dining service and the Lower School Environmental Club for partnering to help us take steps to reduce plastic use!

Earth Day Dress Down Day
Friday, April 20, will be our Earth Day dress-down day fundraiser to support North Branch Land Trust and Blue Chip Farm Animal Refuge. Students wearing shirts that have "Earth Day" printed on their shirts may dress down for free; other students who dress down must wear green-themed t-shirts and pay $2. The Lower School Environmental Club encourages you live Earth Day every day by using less, recycling right, and caring for nature all of the time and in every place.

Speech Prep

As the seventh-grade speech dates get closer, the iPresent team is offering several after-school opportunities for students to work on their speeches. The dates are optional, but they are very helpful. If students are behind on their speeches, however, we will contact parents to request students to stay after school to meet with iPresent teachers. All meetings will run from 3:15-5:00 p.m. Students can stay for the entire time or a portion of the time. The dates are as follows:

Thursday, April 12
Monday, April 16
Thursday, April 19

Classroom Happenings

Grade 8 to visit Head Start:

This year each grade level has been asked to perform a service project in conjunction with our Round Square initiative. The Beekman Street Head Start Center in Wilkes-Barre will be the focus for the eighth grade this year. The eighth-grade students will visit with the pre-school aged children, and learn about why programs like this are so important to our community. The date for this project is April 24; the students will leave our school at 8:20 a.m. and return by 10:15 a.m. We are asking students to donate a new or gently used age appropriate book to be left at the Head Start center.

Upcoming Grade 7 Events
On Thursday, April 26 the seventh grade will venture on a tour of the Upper School campus. Speeches will be given during the morning followed by a trip to the Kingston campus. Normal Sem attire applies for the day's activities. Lunch will be provided at the Upper School dining hall. Students will return in time for their 3:12 p.m. dismissal.

On Friday, April 27 the seventh grade will travel to Frances Slocum State Park for a geocaching activity utilizing GPS tracking devices. Students will be bussed from school following their speeches and return to school before end of the day dismissal at 3:12 p.m. Pizza and snacks will be provided for lunch while at the park. Dress down rules will apply for students for the occasion.

Please contact Mr. Davis with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your cooperation.

Grade 2 service project with Meals on Wheels
The second grade students recently participated in a service project for Meals on Wheels of Wyoming Valley. Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals to 100 housebound individuals Monday through Friday. Second-graders made 100 spring cards to deliver along with the healthy meals. Some of the children referred to the cards as "100 smiles" that would be shared. Later in the spring the children hope to visit the kitchen of the Church of Christ Uniting in Kingston where the meals are prepared. The following link will give more information about Meals on Wheels of Wyoming Valley: https://www.mealsonwheelswyomingvalley.com. Photos of the students and their project are available below in the Life at Lower School section.
