Ice Hockey - Boys Varsity (Prep Team)

 

Wyoming Seminary's hockey program is an associate member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). The team is now a proud member of the Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL), along with Gilmore Academy, Lake Forest Academy, Shady Side Academy, St. Francis Prep, Upper Canada College, Bishop’s College School, Rice Memorial, Ridley College and Rothesay Netherwood School. The program is dedicated to developing student-athletes to their full potential, on the ice and in the classroom. Designed around the academic calendar, Sem’s hockey schedule exposes our student-athletes to the best competition while maintaining the academic integrity of the school.

Sem's hockey program played its first competitive season in 1992-93. The prep team now plays an approximately 35-game schedule with four to five tournaments/showcases per season against prep schools from across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and New England. Some of the tournaments the program has participated in include: Middlesex/St. Mark's William Barber Memorial Tournament, Northwood Holiday Tournament in Lake Placid, Albany Academy Rider Cup, Trinity-Pawling Empire Cup, Phillips Exeter Invitational, Shady Side Academy Thanksgiving Classic, the St. Francis Tournament in Buffalo and St. George's School's Howard Invitational.

Seminary student-athletes have gone on to play in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, OHL, QMJHL, USHL, NAHL, USPHL, EHL, BCHL, OJHL, CCHL and various professional leagues across Europe and Asia, as well as NCAA Division I, Division III, U Sports and ACHA programs including, but not limited to, Boston University, Bentley, Harvard, Alaska (Anchorage), American International, Norwich, Hamilton, Skidmore, New England College, St. Michaels, Hobart, Lebanon Valley, Elmira, Southern New Hampshire University, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Cortland, SUNY Geneseo, Worcester State, Neumann, Penn State, Arizona, Drexel, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, Castleton State, Curry College, University of New Hampshire, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, University of Vermont and Middlebury.

Dennis Packard ‘00 played for the U.S. National Team Development Program during his senior year before matriculating to Harvard University. Packard was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 2001 and went on to play over 300 games as a professional, primarily in the AHL, before retiring in 2010. Arpad Mihaly ‘01, a former member of the Romanian National Team alongside fellow Sem alumnus Zoltan Pal ‘99, has played over 1,000 games as a professional across numerous leagues in North America and Europe.

Stephen McGeary — Head Coach

Dr. Stephen McGeary joined the Wyoming Seminary boys ice hockey coaching staff prior to the 2022-23 season. He was named Head Coach following the season.

Coach McGeary was a key member of the staff in 2022-23, helping the Blue Knight post a 21-9 record that included first-place finishes in the Shady Side Thanksgiving Tournament in Pittsburgh and the St. George's Tournament in Rhode Island. Sem finished second in the 10-team Midwest Prep Hockey League (MPHL).

A native of nearby Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Coach McGeary was an excellent hockey player. He played Junior A hockey in Ontario, Canada, with the Elliot Lake Bobcats and the Manitoulin Islanders and also played NCAA Division III hockey at Bethel University in Minnesota.

Coach McGeary is also a dorm parent and Upper School English teacher at Wyoming Seminary.
