Summer Residential Life Director

The Residential Life Director (RD) is the highest-level residential position for the Summer at Sem Institutes. The Residential Life Director is hired and assigned to oversee and supervise the residential experience of the summer programs to assure a safe, enjoyable experience for all participants and staff.

The RD takes a lead role in resolving higher-level participant issues and assures that all problems are promptly addressed. The Residential Life director supervises the counselors/residential assistants (RAs), and provides regular feedback about the residential staff and participants to the Summer at Sem senior administrators. The RD also serves as a liaison with other offices on campus, such as dining services, student health office and the maintenance department.

The Residential Director position assists with training the residential life staff before the programs begin, and provide guidance and leadership on arrival and departure days. During the programs, the RD monitors the work of the residential staff, and works with senior administrators to mediate and resolve staff issues. This director also ensures that program rules are adhered to at all times by participants and staff, and responds to parent questions and concerns about the program while it is in session and also attends meals with students, weekend activities and trips. The RD also provides leadership support for dorm heads and lead dorm staff. This position requires on campus residency during the summer term. This director is a strong leadership presence and regularly visit the residences and program events. The RD helps ensure that all incidents are properly documented, including medical emergencies and disciplinary situations. At the conclusion of the program, the RD provides performance evaluations of the residential staff.

This is a full-time seasonal position with substantial on-call duties. RD lives on campus and is the crucial liaison between parents, making themselves available to answer questions and resolve problems. Bachelor’s degree required; Minimum three years of experience in Residential Life at the high school or college level required; five years or more preferred. Relevant experience includes Resident Assistant, student programming, boarding school supervision, teacher, etc. Experience working with international and academically motivated and/or artistically driven students, preferably in an intensive residential setting. Must offer demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in an educational setting and flexibility and willingness to work long hours. Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times when dealing with staff, participants, and parents is also required. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
