Summer Explorations

Primary and Middle School Programs

Our Summer Explorations program is designed to engage students in learning and exploring through workshops that emphasize hands-on experiences and lots of FUN!

Experienced teachers, administrators, and teaching interns provide classroom instruction and supervised activities. The program is held on our beautiful Lower School campus in Forty Fort, PA.

Students may attend a morning session, afternoon session, or both. Students attending a full day must bring a lunch including a cold pack, if necessary.

Calling all amazing illustrators and authors, to explore age-appropriate and ability-appropriate games and activities in Emergent Writing and Reading with Mrs. Feibus. Discover just how much fun writing and reading can be, as you use your skills and learn new ones, to help you to write and illustrate your own original books about all kinds of things. 

Write books ○ Create beautiful illustrations ○ Be a guest reader and share what you write ○ Play literacy games with your friends.

Maker Mania with Meredith Shafer

Students in this class will put their hands and brains to use in a variety of ways! Crafting, building, and baking are just the beginning as we spend the week learning and creating together!

Soccer Shots with Jim Darling

Get ready to "Celebrate the Cup — France Fever." Soccer Shots is an engaging children's soccer program with a focus on character development. Our caring team positively impacts children's lives on and off the field through best in class coaching, curriculum, and communication. This camp offers soccer skills training, fun games that reinforce newly acquired skills, imaginative play, themed crafts, scrimmages, and stories. Each participant will receive a water bottle and T-shirt that reinforces the camp theme.

Lego Stop Motion Movies with Jason Sherry

Create the characters, props, and script before shooting your film. Use stop-motion animation and iMovie to create movie magic!

Gardening Science with Barbara Rogers

Find out how plants turn the sun's energy into fuel for our bodies! We'll explore how we eat plant parts every day, design and plant a garden in the outdoor classroom, make our own tasty snacks, and plant a vegetable garden to take home. 

PM Session:

Maker Challenge with Harry Shafer

This class in paper crafting explores the many ways that students can make and create using simple materials. Activities in origami, paper airplanes, fans, and kites are just some of the things that we will design.

It's a Small World After All with Lisa Iskra

Enjoy learning about the wonderful world of microbes with hands-on activities using microscopes and additional lab equipment.

Beat Boredom with Board Games with Harry Shafer

This workshop will introduce a wide variety of board games to students, ranging from the classics (Life, Monopoly, Clue) to the modern (Quelf, Taboo, Heads Up), including card games and brain games as well. After students have had the opportunity to experience many different types of games, then the real fun begins as they design their own! From concept, to board design, to game play, to finished product, students will work together to make their own amazing game!

Running to Write: Miles to go Before we Sleep with Anne DeMarzio

In this course for middle-school children, we will job-run a daily short course and then spend some time stretching, chatting, and writing! Many studies show a strong correlation between exercise and creativity, and many writers acknowledge that they do much of their writing when they're not sitting in front of their computers but when they are going about their daily lives or even taking a long walk or job. This camp hopes to develop the child's sense that the mind and body are importantly connected, that exercise is for everyone, and that we can even write as we run.

Everyday Chemistry with Lisa Iskra

In this course, students will explore common chemical reactions using everyday household ingredients. 

Week 2 (June 17-21)

Music Exploration with Margaret McCann 

We will sing, dance, and learn about different types of instruments and styles of musics. We will even make our own instruments!

Kid-lympics with Meredith Shafer

Go for the gold as you compete in friendly competitions. We will play sports, games, and compete in Minute to Win It challenges. We will even be making our own medals to wear during the closing ceremonies!

Have you ever noticed math is everywhere? Come and strengthen your math skills as we play games, solve puzzles, learn about money, measure ingredients, and plan our very own lemonade stand!

Science and The Magic Garden with Barbara Rogers

Just like Geppetto and Jiminy Cricket, we'll turn something ordinary into something magical! We'll uncover the magic inside seeds and watch them turn into plants before our very eyes! Making a table-top garden complete with fairyland creatures, miniature plants, and colorful flowers bringing our week to magical end.

Physics of Flight with Lisa Iskra

Students will apply the physics of flight creating and testing a different style aircraft each day.

Nature Writing: Turning our Walking into Words with Anne DeMarzio

In this course for middle-school children, we will explore on foot various settings of the Wyoming Valley in order to enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of the natural world and to fuel our creative and literary engines. Students will be encouraged to come prepared with comfortable hiking or walking shoes and supplied with sketch books for a daily nature walk. During the second part of the day, sometimes in the classroom, students will work on a draft of a story, essay, or even a graphic novel.

PM Sessions

C.S.I. at Sem with Lisa Iskra

Students in this camp will explore crime scene investigation techniques while solving a mystery.

Introduction to Metalsmithing with Kate Mercado

In this class, middle school students will explore metalsmithing techniques and jewelry design as forms of creative expression. Principles of craftsmanship and studio safety will be emphasized as students learn about basic precious metal fabrication techniques, materials, equipment, and design. Traditional metal fabrication skills will be introduced, including: drilling, piercing, surface embellishment, wire forming, riveting, filing, and rough finishing. Students will apply these new skills to create artwork the reflects their personal interests. 

Week 3 (June 24-28)

Water, Water, Everywhere with Margaret McCann 

While learning all about ocean life, we will enjoy working with water tables, making crafts, playing in our backyard outdoor pool, and sprinkler time!

Chemistry with Kids with Christine Poole

We will be exploring chemistry through safe, age appropriate, hands-on experiments in this class. During our exciting week, we will bake, concoct, transform ingredients, and get messy—all while learning about how chemistry is part of our daily lives. Cookies, T-shirts, slime, and exploding volcanoes are just a few of the fun activities that await your budding scientist! Students learn about different animals, do crafts, and play games. Everyone is welcome to bring in their own stuffed furry friends! 

PM Session:

Wide World of Food with Anne DeMarzio

This food and culture camp will feature lessons and activities surrounding the cuicine and traditions of several countries, including France, Italy, China, and Mexico. Students will learn about staple foods and recipes, make and sample dishes, and discover how American cuisine has been shaped by its immigration history.

Hikes and Natural Wonders with Barbara Rogers

Nature abounds in our local woodlands! Come take a look at the wonderful variety of plant life, geological formations, and magnificent views our environment has to offer. The natural beauty of northeast Pennsylvania will not disappoint us!

Seriously Science with Kris McCarthy

Hey there, future scientists! Are you curious about how things work? Join our team for a week filled with science experiments, science stories, puzzles, and genuine hands-on fun!

Field Hockey Camp with Jenera Quinones

This camp is designed to help introduce and develop youth players into competitive and skilled players. We will cover both the basic skills of the game as well as set them up to play in small games to close out each day. The goal is for participants to walk away learning something new, have fun, and find a new love of the game!
Athletes should bring: sneakers/cleats, shin guards, mouth guards, and a water bottle.

PM Session:

Sport-a-Day with Ed Plaksa

Try out a new sport each day with lots of practice and playing time!

Journaling in the Park with Jen Green

Join us on a week-long journey through some local parks as we work to strengthen your child's independent writing skills. Each day we will travel to a different park and spend time doing some light hiking to a cozy spot to stop and journal. Students will be encouraged to explore their writing strengths by responding to different prompts having to do with the daily trip while creating a scrapbook of their experiences.

Entering Grade 5-8

PM Sessions:

Field Hockey Camp with Jenera Quinones

This camp is for athletes looking to learn the game of field hockey or to prepare for the upcoming season. The camp will offer a range of drills, stick work, and fundamental knowledge of the game.
Athletes should bring: sneakers/cleats, shin guards, mouth guards, goggles, and a water bottle.

Junior Arts

Summer at Sem Junior Arts: All the World’s a Stage! is unique in many ways—not just because of its focus on Shakespeare.

Through theatre games, acting workshops, and a culminating show, campers will sharpen their performance skills while having a blast. The final show will be a treat featuring mischievous fairies, an enchanted forest, solving mysteries, and wildly mistaken identities.

This summer, stay active and learn new skills while having fun. This camp will instill self-confidence, public speaking skills, and encourage use of imagination. Each week will include literacy components and encourage learning while having fun!
